Unexpected printing stop?

I am using an Solidoodle Gen3 3D Printer with a macbook pro (mountain lion), and during longer prints the machine would freeze and stop.

The Solidoodle 3D Printer becomes unresponsive to commands through repetier and I have to click "disconnect" before I can gain control of the s3 again.

In the mean time, the S3 heating bed and extruder remain at high (operating) temperatures, so now I'm hesitant to leave my s3 by itself whilst printing.

Here's a copy of the print log.  As you can see, it froze at 5:25 in the morning.  at 9:34 I clicked disconnect in repetier.

5:25:28 AM: Printing layer 171 of 519
  9:34:29 AM: Connection closed

Does anyone have a solution?  And is there a way to reset the machine and continue to print where the print stopped, so I don't waste half a print?
